Organization and Activities of the UNCPGA

UNCPGA Meetings

The UNCPGA holds an annual meeting to provide a platform for former Presidents to exchange ideas and experiences and discuss issues of mutual interest. The UNCPGA traditionally convenes at least three meetings a year around the world, including at UN Headquarters in New York during the opening session of the UN General Assembly to discuss major issues on its Agenda.

Attendance of Opening UNGA Session

Over the past two years, the newly elected Presidents of 78th and 79th UNGA sessions have invited the Chairman of the UNGPGA and its members as special guests and recognized their presence in the UNGA Hall in their opening addresses to the assembled world leaders.

The Group of Friends of the PGA (GoF-PGA)

The GoF-PGA is an initiative of the UNCPGA composed of the Permanent Representatives of the Member States of all the former (living) Presidents of the UN General Assembly and from all five UN Regional Groups. It serves as an informal Consultative Forum and a unique standing diplomatic resource to support the President of the UN General Assembly in regard to her/his priorities and initiatives for the execution of her/his UNGA mandate.

Diplomatic Reception

At the beginning of each UNGA session in September, the UNCPGA hosts an annual diplomatic reception at UN Headquarters in New York to mark the transition between successive Presidents of the UNGA.

Working Group Meetings

The UNCPGA holds working group meetings to discuss priority issues on the agenda of the UNGA and challenges related to the work of the UN.

High-Level Symposium

The UNCPGA also hosts high-level symposiums on topics of significant importance to the international community.

Forum on Global Challenges

The UNCPGA organizes forums on various global challenges to provide a space for experts and former Presidents to share their insights and contribute to the work of the UN.
