President of the 77th Session and 11th Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly

A career diplomat, President Kőrösi joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983.  He has spent his entire professional life in public service, combining national duties with assignments received from various international communities. In various Government service posts for his country, he was responsible for security policy, multilateral diplomacy and human rights cooperation.

President Kőrösi has served as Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations since 2010.  During his tenure in New York, he has co-chaired the intergovernmental process (Open Working Group of the General Assembly on Sustainable Development Goals) tasked with producing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals at its heart.  He also served as Vice-President of the General Assembly at its sixty-sixth session. From 2006 to 2010, he was head of the first and second European Departments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  From 2002 to 2006, he was Hungary’s Ambassador to Greece.  From 2001 to 2002, he served as Deputy State Secretary in charge of Multilateral Diplomacy, as the head of the NATO-WEU (North Atlantic Treaty Organization-Western European Union) Department.

Prior to that, President Kőrösi was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Hungarian Embassy in Tel Aviv.  He also was the Chargé d’Affaires at the Hungarian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates. As Director (State Secretary) of the Office of the President of Hungary, President Kőrösi worked alongside the President of the Republic as a member of the High-level Panel on Water, co-convened by the Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank Group.  He performed a similar role in the framework of the Water and Climate Leaders panel, co-convened by the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the President of UN-Water. A founding member of the Hungarian Scientific Panel on Climate Change, he is a permanent invitee to the Presidential Committee on Sustainable Development at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the National Council on Sustainable Development at the Hungarian National Assembly.

President Kőrösi is a 1983 graduate of the Institute of International Relations in Moscow.  In addition, he attended Hebrew University, where he studied Middle East issues.  He also completed a diplomatic course at the University of Leeds in 1991, and later, a strategic negotiation course at Harvard University. Born in 1958, he is married with one daughter.
